Federal Contracting Acronym

RFQ

Request for Quotation

Plain-English definition

A Request for Quotation asks vendors to submit price quotes for defined requirements, often when specifications are clear and competition is primarily price-based. RFQs are common under simplified acquisition procedures and on contract vehicles where technical approach is largely prescribed.

Why it matters

RFQs usually have shorter windows and lighter volumes than RFPs but still require strict compliance with quoted terms.

Where you will see it

SAM.gov notices, GSA Schedule RFQs, and task-order competitions on IDIQ vehicles.

Example in context

An RFQ under a BPA asks vendors to quote unit prices for listed labor categories.
