Federal Contracting Acronym
SAM
System for Award Management
Plain-English definition
The System for Award Management (SAM.gov registration) consolidates entity data, exclusions, and certifications required for most federal contracts and grants. Vendors obtain a Unique Entity ID (UEI), maintain CAGE codes, and update representations and certifications that flow into solicitations. Inactive registration blocks award and payment. SAM is distinct from the SAM.gov contract opportunities site, though both are accessed through the SAM.gov domain.
Why it matters
Registration lapses and inaccurate representations are common root causes of award delays and compliance findings.
Where you will see it
Entity registration workflows, solicitation clauses requiring active SAM registration, and invoice/payment systems validating UEIs.
Example in context
Before proposal submission, a contracts administrator renews SAM and confirms NAICS codes match the solicitation set-aside.
