Where Federal Spending Concentrates

The Federal Spending Map visualizes a sample of U.S. federal contract awards drawn from public USAspending.gov records across selected technology NAICS codes. In the current default view, the map shows 5,000 qualifying awards totaling $376.7B across 49 states and 39 awarding agencies, with an average award size of $75.3M. These figures reflect the active filter set — category, time period, and agency — and are not scoped to any CaptureIQ customer account.

Bubble size on the map reflects award concentration by state within the sample. Click a state to review agencies, contractors, category spend, and recent awards for that location.

Federal AI and Machine Learning Spending

AI and machine learning awards are identified when award descriptions include terms such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, neural networks, or related language, with NAICS 541511/541512 as additional signals. The current sample includes $472.9M classified as AI / ML across 12 awards.

Federal Cybersecurity Spending

Cybersecurity spending includes contracts whose descriptions reference cybersecurity, information security, zero trust, threat detection, or similar themes, with NAICS 541513 as a supporting signal. The current sample includes $8.4B in cybersecurity-classified awards (144 awards).

Federal Cloud Spending

Cloud contracts are classified from descriptions mentioning cloud computing, cloud services, SaaS, IaaS, cloud migration, or major cloud platforms, with NAICS 518210 providing a fallback. Cloud-classified awards in the current sample total $6.7B across 91 awards.

Federal Data and Analytics Spending

Data and analytics awards reference data platforms, analytics, business intelligence, ETL, data science, and related terms, with NAICS 541519 and 541690 as supporting codes. Data-classified awards in the current sample total $361.1B across 4753 awards.

How to Use the Federal Spending Map

Start with the default five-year view to see broad federal spending patterns. Narrow the time window to the last twelve months or three years when you want a more recent picture. Category buttons isolate AI / ML, cybersecurity, cloud, or data themes. The agency dropdown lists awarding agencies present in the current sample — choose one to see how a specific department concentrates spend. Click any highlighted state to open a detail panel with top agencies, contractors, category breakdown, and trend lines calculated from award dates in the sample.

The recent awards list shows public federal fields only: agency, description, amount, category, location, contractor/recipient when published, award date, and award identifier. These are historical obligations, not open solicitations.

Federal Spending Map Methodology

Data is retrieved from USAspending.gov using federal contract award types and a technology NAICS slice (541511, 541512, 541519, 518210, 541513, 541690). The published dataset contains up to 5,000 normalized qualifying awards assembled from multiple USAspending queries. Individual source queries return up to 100 records per request. Categories are assigned using regular expressions on award descriptions with NAICS-based fallbacks. State totals aggregate place-of-performance fields. The map refreshes on a published warehouse schedule; if USAspending is temporarily unavailable, the page serves the last successful snapshot.
