Research abstract
Synoptic approach to harmonize discrete data streams in application development 3/20/2018
Purchasing a new or used vehicle can be an exciting, but overwhelming experience. Numerous websites
contain information on vehicle safety features, makes and models, cost, history, recalls, and crash and
repair records. This large amount of data and its dispersed nature makes for a daunting consumer
experience. Seventy-eight percent of shoppers use third-party sites when considering a vehicle purchase
(25 Amazing Statistics on How Consumers Shop for Cars, 2017). The U.S. Department of Transportation
(U.S. DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is concerned that the plethora of material available and its distributed nature prohibits consumers from making intelligent, unbiased safety-related vehicle purchasing decisions.
IT WORKS, an award-winning Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB), proposes a proof-of-concept
report that describes our Agile approach for designing and developing an easy-to-use, hybrid web and
mobile application. The application provides a scalable framework to seamlessly integrate structured and unstructured data. Using a hybrid approach for development, we will provide an application that is more
cost-effective, easier to maintain, less error prone, and faster to develop than traditional native applications. The resulting application will incorporate Natural Language Processing and be optically appealing, simple,
and intuitive for consumers searching for safety-related vehicle information.
