Research abstract

Complete human anatomy avatars have a broad role in advanced training environments, performance-related physiological modeling, and simulations for the purpose of designing protective armor. The overall goal of this project is to design and develop computer software and data structures for adding articulated joints and natural motions to USARIEMs static finite element avatars and to create a graphical user interface (GUI) for repositioning, planning and activating avatar physical movement. During the Phase I, we have successfully demonstrated our software with the capability to use scripts or an interactive GUI for avatar posing and movement tasks. The Phase II will focus on further enhancing the avatar posing and movement software with new capabilities, including: 1) scripting complex motions using high level commands with the help of an organized motion database; 2) assembling equipment onto the avatar body and placing the avatar in different 3D scenes; 3) anthropometry morphing of avatars, and 4) additional GUI development. The software will build on our existing technology on anthropometry and anatomical model generation and manipulation (AMGM) and new capabilities will be tested with various avatars (both male and female) provided by USARIEM and different motions (common and military relevant motions).
