Research abstract

Next generation munition systems must be capable of operating in and mitigating a multitude of threats. These threats include intentional enemy electromagnetic countermeasures in contested environments, electromagnetic interference form a congested spectrum, as well as environmental threats (such as adverse weather) and even solar weather events and cosmic radiation. As diverse as these threats are, they can be commonly viewed as components of the radio-frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. An ideal munitions system will have the capability to stay on track and on target, no matter the environment or threat. Conductive Composite's multifunctional materials technology approach yields a composite layup that attenuates multiple classes of threat levels - thus new protection levels are now possible in a single lightweight, multifunctional composite. Historically, electromagnetic shielding has been provided on a composite structure via secondary applications. At Conductive Composites, the art of integrating the protective materials directly into the composite system simplifies the manufacturing process, improves integration of properties, and also help remove bonding issues and thermal stresses that are caused by mismatches between distinct layers of materials (such as solid metal foils or paints on composite skins).
