Research abstract

Abstract Koronis Biomedical TechnologiesKBTand its collaborates propose to develop a wearable system to monitor patient coughs at homeThe frequency and intensity of a patient s cough can be instrumental in the continual monitoring and treatment of many chronic respiratory conditionsCurrent clinical methods are limited and lack the ability to capture long term trends in the cough frequency and severityA wearable cough monitor that allows patients to maintain daily routines would be important for several respiratory conditions including asthmapneumoniatuberculosiscystic fibrosisbronchiectasis and COPDIn phase IKBT will prototype a wearable cough monitor that is attached to the patient s chest under their clothing and can be worn comfortably twenty four hours a day for extended periods of timeThe cough sensor is acoustically coupled to the patient s skincaptures analyzes lung sounds and wirelessly transmits the data to a smartphone Narrative Non Cystic Fibrosis bronchiectasis is a chronic and progressive respiratory condition characterized by irreversible and abnormal dilation of the bronchial lumenOnce thought to be an orphan diseasethe prevalence of bronchiectasis has been growing at a rate ofper year sinceand currently affects more thanpeople in the USDiagnosis is made using high resolution CT scanswhich show enlargements in the geometry of lower airway branching and a thickening of airway wallsIt is an acquired disease processrepresenting the end stage of a diverse range of causes and can affect both children and adults
