Research abstract

This proposal is focused on an effort to develop, test, and validate a prototype for the application of environmental intelligence in the battlespace. This prototype will be designed to allow air and missile defense (AMD) system operators to determine the impact of weather on a missile system, or multiple systems, for launch decisions. The tools are designed for both combat readiness planning and engagement response during adverse weather conditions, where there is a high likelihood of intercept failure. The prototypes leverage over a decade in weather requirements research to develop a tool for in situ weather assessment. The prototype will improve battlespace environment intelligence, and it will allow for autonomous weather decision support for AMD systems. This battlespace environment intelligence will inform the Warfighter whether or not an incoming missile can be reliably detected, or whether or not an interceptor can reliably hit its target. This effort will also transition the capability to operations by training users, allowing them to shape the future of the capability. The successful completion of this effort will provide a process for using contemporary environmental intelligence, or high-resolution sensor data, which will effectively be treated as an actor in the battlespace.
