Research abstract

Electron-ion colliders (EICs) are the best microscopes for studying the structure of nuclear matter, particularly the nature and origin of spin in nuclei. To be effective, such machines require electron and ion beams with polarizations as high as 80%. Comprehensive end-to-end simulations to study the spin dynamics and optimize the beam polarization require exorbitant computational effort. Technical Approach: We will improve the capabilities for modeling spin polarized beams by taking advantage of modern computational architectures and improved algorithms for spin tracking. Our easy-to-use interface will allow scientists to quickly launch large-scale simulations on remote HPC clusters. Phase I Results: In Phase I we developed code profiling tools and used these to identify computation bottlenecks in the spin tracking code, Zgoubi. With this information significant improvements were made to some of the most computationally intensive algorithms, yielding significant improvements. Finally, a new method for symplectic tracking through magnetic field maps was developed. Phase II Plans: We will update and extend the capabilities of the tracking code Zgoubi. Along with parallelization of the code and enhancement of tracking methods we will implement single-click initiation of Zgoubi simulation on remote clusters. This enhanced version of Zgoubi will be used to assist in optimization and validation of designs for the EIC. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits: High powered computing is a critical tool in science and technology innovation. As part of this project we will develop capabilities for ‘single-click’ computing that will enable users to launch sophisticated simulations onto remote HPC machines through a simple graphic interface. Development of this technology will have significant application across my areas of scientific computing.
