Research abstract

Corvid Technologies, LLC proposes the following technical approach to enhance the state-of-the-art in hard kill active protection system (APS) end-game modeling. End-game refers to the effects (both overpressure and fragmentation) APS countermeasures have on incoming threats. In order to develop and evaluate hard kill APS systems, those that defeat threats by physically damaging/degrading them to reduce or eliminate lethal effects on target, the physics of the countermeasure/threat engagement must be well understood. Metrics for successful APS engagement vary by threat, and conducting testing across the broad range of threats and engagement scenarios of relevance is both cost- and schedule-prohibitive. In addition, many threats are not available for system testing. Therefore, a predictive physics-based simulation capability that can supplement the inevitable limitations of physical testing is required.
