Research abstract

Medics will use End User Devices (EUD) to capture electronic medical data on casualties treated at the point of injury and during enroute casualty evacuation. In order to facilitate the input of medical information, medics will use the Voice-to-Text technology to fill out fields in the electronics TCCC application running on the EUD. The speech from the medic is sent today from the tactical headset to the EUD using the secure Ultra-Wideband (UWB) wireless technology. Also based on the UWB technology, is an EUD based intercom application that allows medics to talk to each other without encumbering the tactical networks. Both applications rely on an UWB audio adapter that connects to the medics tactical headsets. One drawback of this UWB audio adapter is that when it is connected to the tactical headset, the medic will not anymore be able to listen and/or participate in the communications in the aircraft intercom communication systems (ICS). This proposal addresses this shortcoming by developing an all-in-one universal PTT controller (UPC) and an EUD universal UWB adapter and modifying an Android intercom application. The advanced prototypes will be rugged and usable for field exercises.
