Research abstract

Silvus will develop a wireless ad hoc network for shipboard video distribution. Shipboard wireless communication is an example of harsh communication conditions impaired by frequency selectivity, attenuating bulkheads, transmit power constraints and interference. We employ several physical, MAC and network layer techniques to combat such impairments and avail high data rates for video transmission. The physical layer techniques rely on dual frequency transmission. A higher frequency suffers less from bulkhead attenuation. So, it is used to relay data over the backbone network. Video stream dissemination within compartments takes place on a lower frequency that experiences smaller path loss. We also employ modern error-control coding, interference alignment, linearization techniques and beamforming. Network layer techniques involve an enhanced multicast protocol that removes unnecessary redundancy when transmitting same streams to multiple users. We also address security issues to make the network resilient to attacks and provide logging to inspect malicious activities. Low SWAP-C nodes will be developed during the project
