Research abstract

CHI Systems, in partnership with the Virginia Serious Games Institute, proposes to design, develop, and assess the Interactive Mixed Media augmented Reality Simulation Engine (IMMERSE) technology, a compelling and instructionally rich training experience using augmented and mixed-reality for TC3 trainees, and then evaluate the impact of the IMMERSE approach on trainee understanding and training effectiveness. IMMERSE will be an instructionally sound, engaging augmented-reality training system that can be utilized through commonly-available mobile devices and will focus on addressing a set of the leading causes of preventable deaths on the battlefield and in trauma centers, and will be extensible to other medic skills training and first responder use-cases. CHI will leverage use-cases developed around CHI Systems TC3 training system, termed HapMed, to develop the IMMERSE training prototype and then conduct research to empirically assess and evaluate the impact of augmented reality technologies on trainee understanding and the effectiveness of the augmented/mixed reality training approach, thus advancing the science behind this interesting, yet unproven, technology and aiding the US military in determining how to best invest in and apply AR technology.
