Research abstract

Scalpel is a tool for reducing the barrier-to-entry for firmware patching and maintenance tasks. It enables developers to add features and fix bugs in embedded systems, yet can be used effectively without any specialized knowledge of machine code. Scalpel is built on top of proven GrammaTech technologies in the areas of static analysis and binary rewriting. Scalpel's Phase I prototype demonstrated successful end-to-end development and implementation of bug fixes and new features on real-world embedded systems, offering a basis of confidence in the proposed approach. Scalpel's interface encourages an auditable, reproducible approach to patching.
