Research abstract

Based on successful Phase I feasibility prototype results, this Phase II SBIR project shall develop Long-Distance Oscillating Heat Pipe (LD-OHP) heat transporters for high power, high temperature and low thermal resistance thermal management of solid state power amplifiers (SSPAs) in current- and next-generation spacecraft. The LD-OHP technology initially demonstrated in Phase I and to be more fully characterized in Phase II aims improve the size, weight, power and cost trade-offs of thermal control systems in a wide range of military and civilian applications. Technical foci include improved predictive modeling, empirical characterization of LD-OHP prototype performance through thermal-mechanical-environmental testing, and optimize LD-OHP prototypes to meet the requirements of real-world satellite heat transport applications.
