Research abstract

The Phase I project demonstrated feasibility of novel insensitive nanoparticle based solid fuels to achieve high combustion efficiencies and regression rates in comparison to conventional fuel baselines. These fuels have the potential to meet the program requirements for future Navy solid fuel ramjet (SFRJ) systems. For the Phase II project, fuel formulations will be optimized, production will be scaled up, and testing will be performed under realistic operating conditions using a prototype airbreathing ramjet combustor. Following prototype demonstration, a study will be conducted to demonstrate feasibility of full-scale SFRJ fuel grain production. Engineering work will be performed for the design of a pilot plant for fuel production. A plan for future low rate initial production of a full scale SFRJ fuel grain will be developed.
