Research abstract

Global Engineering and Materials, Inc. (GEM) along with its team member Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) propose to develop and validate an isogeometric analysis toolkit for Abaqus (IGAFA) for a high-fidelity finite element analysis model creation and response and failure prediction of metallic and composite structures. The capability of using IGAFA will be demonstrated via its applications for response and failure prediction of metallic and composite structures of complex geometry and its integration with an existing structural optimization module. Four major developments will be accomplished under the Phase II Option program: 1) automatic generation of volumetric T-spline for a general complex geometry using an all hex based sub-domain decomposition; 2) capability extension of IGAFA for shell element based on a hybrid T-spline surface generator; 3) enhancement of IGA based user-defined element for failure prediction of thin-walled metallic structures; and 4) integration of IGAFA with a structure optimizer for a parameterized design space. The matured and validated IGAFA toolkit will be applied in assisting design and certification of aircraft structures in terms of design iterations, refinement of the prototype analysis, and evaluation of the effectiveness of a repair option.
