Research abstract

The BISCEP engine (Biomass-Incinerating-Stirling-Cycle-Energy-Provider) provides electrical energy to the Marines free of reliance on fossil fuels and at a small, man-portable, scale. Meeting these requirements is extremely important since the proliferation of modern high tech devices has brought a higher energy demand, therefore creating a dangerous and costly reliance on fuel re-supply missions. Mide plans to provide a new type of energy source for the Marines, one that uses biomass material (either as raw organic materials or as discarded waste such as packaging) to provide heat by incineration in order to drive an energy conversion mechanism which will output electrical power. The final unit has a target weight of <88 lbm and 400 W electrical output. Through the use of modern modeling tools to optimize the engine, as well as new and more advanced materials, Mide believes that the required energy densities from the BISCEP engine can be met.
