Research abstract

This SBIR Direct to Phase II effort aims to validate the feasibility of a synchronized, distributed, wearable sensor system for 360-degree blast overpressure (BOP) exposure monitoring. The proposed system achieves full coverage by integrating a modular, node-based sensor array into tactical vests and plate carriers. This effort builds on Advanced Materials and Devices’ (AMAD) established technologies: the OmniBlast Air (OBA), a wearable omnidirectional blast sensor, and the OmniBlast Surrogate (OBS), an anthropometric test platform.  A prototype combining OBS and OBA components has already demonstrated feasibility. Mounted on a plate carrier and surrogate torso, the system was exposed to controlled blast profiles, confirming the viability of a time-synchronized, multi-node BOP sensing network capable of accurately capturing direction and intensity data. The proposed project will focus on full-system engineering—defining requirements, performing functional decomposition, and conducting preliminary design analysis.  Trade studies will optimize sensor placement, synchronization, data handling, size, weight, and power strategies.  Iterative prototypes will be tested under diverse blast conditions and angles.  Final deliverables include a refined integrated prototype validated through laboratory and simulated operational testing, setting the stage for advanced development, system-level risk reduction, and field trials.
