Research abstract

Otherlab's compliant manipulators for underwater robots enable unprecedented capability for small platforms. The manipulators, made of fabric membrane materials have high strength to weight ratio, low cost, high dexterity, and compliant structure. They provide high degree of freedom articulation and force managed control through structural compliance while using fluid from the ambient environment for actuation. They are nearly neutrally buoyant in water and can be deflated and stowed to preserve vehicle hydrodynamic profile.
