Research abstract

The pseudospectral optimal control (PSOC) problem is used for rapid trajectory optimization and provides the ability to re-optimize during flight. This technology was implemented on a Navy-relevant mission, and pseudo-real-time operation was demonstrated. The technical readiness level at the end of the Phase I program is a concept that has been shown to be feasible using analysis and simulation. The proposed Phase II program will demonstrate the operation of the optimal guidance methodology using real-time, multi-processor technology in a laboratory setting. The Phase II program will further improve the PSOC algorithm by exploring a trade space identified during the feasibility study. An actual real time demonstration will be developed and conducted using multiple processors that separately implement the vehicle simulation, vehicle flight control, and guidance using trajectory optimization. The methodology will be demonstrated on a larger set of trajectories, including trajectories with fixed targets and moving targets. Performance objectives will be selected based on Navy-relevant systems and missions. The Phase II Option will include demonstration problems that use PSOC for missions with multiple objectives and to include response to countermeasures.
