Research abstract

In Phase II, one of the primary objectives is to evaluate the Phase I algorithms with real-world periscope imagery. Once a performance baseline is established, we will focus on more challenging scenarios such as low visibility due to inclement weather as well as night time operation. This will require exploration of other sensing modalities, in particular infrared (IR), as well as an extension to dynamic signals such as blinking patterns of lights. We will also develop the ability to incrementally learn and refine models of individual NAVAIDs over time, with the goal of creating a library of known NAVAIDs that can be used for future reference and uploaded to a central repository when in port for sharing among the fleet. Finally, we will design the required interfaces to enable the phased transition into operational settings. While we have developed a notional user interface (UI) for development and proof of concept demonstration, we do not envision a separate display but rather tight integration with the ISIS pipeline for use with the Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical Systems (SWFTS) Operator Machine Interface (OMI).
