Research abstract

US Navy EOD teams need to outfit currently procured small ROVs with a cost effective, aftermarket, multi-platform compatible, Charge Delivery System (CDS) that can use existing EOD explosive materials and processes. Boston Engineering has developed multiple underwater vehicle systems that deliver customer payloads, already overcoming common payload delivery issues such as changes to hydrodynamic loading and variances in system stability due to addition or removal of mass while providing high reliability attach/detach mechanisms. Our solution is inexpensive and easily assembled to a COTS ROV. The compatibility of this system with existing demolition charges avoids impacting the controlled explosive supply chain. Our system is passive, removing cost and complication related to electrical or software integration into the COTS ROV. Phase I focuses on verifying the robustness of our design and proving individual subsystem functionality, minimizing risk to Phase II. We propose to provide a functional, TRL6 prototype, capable of neutralizer placement on bottom, moored, and floating mines at the conclusion of PHII or sooner.
