Research abstract

With computer-based systems becoming ubiquitous in all aspects of civilian and military hardware, weaponized high power microwave (HPM) sources pose a danger to the U.S. defense, logistic, and economic infrastructure. Of particular concern is the reliability and survivability of U.S. military aerial assets in the presence of intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) from HPM sources.A comprehensive HPM survivability and/or vulnerability assessment program for existing and anticipated U.S. aerial assets to continually evolving HPM threats is an infeasible task. A predictive physics-based modeling and simulation (M&S) capability is required to assess the survivability/vulnerability of these targets, without the need for large-scale testing efforts. XL Scientific proposes to build the Directed Radio Frequency Energy Assessment Model version 2 (DREAM2)a physics-based M&S capability that can estimate the survivability/vulnerability of red targets and blue assets to HPM weapon attack. This effort is the culmination of years of predictive effects research performed by XL Scientific team personnel.XL Scientific is in the unique position to not only compile the results of that research into a cohesive software simulation tool, but to integrate that tool into the preeminent HPM weapon engagement simulation tool, the Joint Radio-frequency Effectiveness Model (JREM).
