Research abstract

In recent years, GTL has effectively used the Universal Combustion Device Stability (UCDS) process to predict, diagnose and eliminate combustion instability in rocket engines and motors.UCDS is formed from a general set of fluid dynamics and is therefore applicable to all unsteady fluid dynamic systems. The UCDS process is applicable to gas turbine augmentors and its use would reduce the risk, cost, and schedule of developing new augmentors. In the Phase I effort, GTL confirmed the feasibility of applying the UCDS process to augmentors and their damping devices. The next step towards this goal is to optimize the UCDS software tools and verify its effectiveness for augmentor-type applications. To accomplish this, in the Phase II effort, GTL will apply UCDS to perform a detailed assessment of the AFRL flameholder test rig. This effort will seek to explain the unsteady behavior of the flameholder test rig across its operational envelope. In doing so, this effort will validate the UCDS tools and provide confidence to apply the capability to augmentors.
