Research abstract

There has been technology improvements since the F-35 8 x 20 MFD was first introduced. AMLCDs used in consumer electronics technology exists today that far exceeds 128 PPI of the original F-35 MFD.Displays with resolutions over 256 PPI are available in commercial formats. Long battery life forced display providers to maintain very high display efficiencies despite increased resolution by developing processing methods for high electron mobility semiconductors. The high PPI technology combined with increasingly high efficacy LED light sources enable higher luminance without thermal overrun. The same technology used to increase the resolution also delivers faster update rates that is exploited commercially when showing high speed video (such sporting events). In addition, the input interface has experienced some avionics specific innovations.Optically enhanced resistive touchscreens have been developed specifically to address the human factor demands within the cockpit. This type touchscreen requires a purposeful touch to activate, thereby eliminating accidental activation.Resistive touchscreens is not based on light interruption, and therefore will be compatible with advanced imaging system technologies that detect light beyond the NIR band. They will further enable touch input redundancy if necessary.
