Research abstract

As a result of establishing the feasibility of making real-time, radio-frequency, transient electric- and magnetic-field measurements with probes and interconnections that do not interfere with the near-field patterns of antennas, a cost-effective sensor array will be produced, demonstrated, and delivered. The proposed three-stage program will first address the enhancement of the frequency response, sensitivity, and dynamic range of both the electric- and magnetic-field signal channels of the High-Power Microwave Near-Field Mapping system. The second stage will involve the expansion of an individual, dual-element, electric- and magnetic-field sensor cell into a sensor array that is both modular and reconfigurable. The third stage of Phase II will include the calibration of both a polarization-sensitive field sensor and sets of discrete, hybrid electric- and magnetic-field sensors, as well as in-house and field testing to confirm the ability to measure high-power radio-frequency and microwave transients in a real-time, single-shot mode across a broad range of amplitudes up to the field-induced breakdown of air.
