Research abstract

The trend in engine design has always been to push the limits of temperature and inertial loading for performance and efficiency. This is true more than ever as engineers strive to save energy, increase performance, and reduce emissions.Given this trend, it is very important that the product design and R&D engineers have the ability to measure engine parameters during operation. The instrument proposed is designed for that purpose.Gas turbine engines have historically been limited by material in the rotor section.Higher gas temperatures passing through the turbine yields higher efficiency and performance.Measurements of temperature, pressure, strain, and acceleration in and around the turbine blades and passages allow evaluation of design changes, thermodynamic performance, and material limits. This requires a high channel count, resolution, and sample rate instrument with low noise. To achieve this, IR Telemetrics will develop a completely non-contact (wireless) design for rotating applications and will accommodate more than 100 channels, have 20 bit resolution, at 400kSPS, with a noise floor of -90 dB and capable of doing this at 25,000rpm.This instrument allows adjustment of parameters like gain, offset, and sensor stimulus setting to be changed for each channel.
