Research abstract

It is not currently possible for microalgae processors to determine if Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) treatment of algae is a commercially-attractive proposition within their application when the literature contains such a wide range of reported PEF treatment conditions, leading to unclear and inconsistent baselines. A more controlled approach to determine the effects of PEF on algae is required, where the species are known, the treatment conditions (pulse shape, electric field values, treatment time, etc.) are controlled and consistent, and the energy required and the resulting level of cell breakage are recorded. Diversified Technologies Inc. (DTI), will carry out this effort in cooperation with The Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI), using a DTI-built PEF system donated to AzCATI. Collecting and releasing this data is necessary to provide a valid argument for commercial adoption of PEF processing for microalgae products. Streamlining the adoption of PEF by commercial entities, with applications in oil production, algal food products and more will further the US' overall interests in environmental stability and food security. This effort aims to aid in the adoption of
