Research abstract

ABSTRACT: Unsteady processes, such as vortex shedding and local extinction, play a key role in augmentor stability. These processes occur on fast timescales, and can involve complex, three-dimensional (3D) information. To fully elucidate unsteady processes, such as flame ignition and blowout, fast diagnostics that can provide information over a 3D volume are needed. In this research program, we will develop a flexible imaging system for applying fast, 3D diagnostics to gas turbine combustors. The system will serve as platform technology that can be applied for a range of combustion diagnostics, including light field imaging, particle image velocimetry, emissions imaging, and volumetric laser-induced fluorescence. The Phase I project will be focused on application to three-dimensional, three-component (3D3C) particle image velocimetry (PIV).The technique will be used for measuring parameters such as local flow strain that are critical to unsteady processes in augmentors. We will develop hardware and software for high speed 3D3C PIV measurements for gas-turbine relevant flames. In Phase II, we will extend the system to other diagnostic techniques, implement enhancements to system performance, and extend the maturity of the hardware and software components of this technology towards commercialization.; BENEFIT: Technology developed under this program will involve a flexible, platform technology for applying a range of high-speed, 3D flame-flow diagnostics in gas turbine combustor flames. The same platform technology can potentially be used for measuring flame front location, velocity, species, heat release, density, and fuel distribution. The technology has significant commercial potential beyond gas turbine combustion and could be applied to almost any practical combustion system.
