Research abstract

A very large amount of fossil fuel has been transferred to remote or isolated communities for producing potable water and generating power. Reducing and eliminating the fuel use and allowing these facilities to become self-sufficient and secure are essential. In this program we propose to determine the highest throughput ionomer membrane for vacuum desalination and build a scalable prototype of the PEM VD system suitable for coupling with any independent energy generation system in remote applications. The system will be an integrated potable, hot, & non-potable water supply with power generation and storage. The plan of phase 1 is to (1) create a test system to (2) quantify and optimize the efficacy and efficiency of the membrane vacuum desalination technology. This data will then be used to (3) design and create a scalable functioning prototype unit. This hybrid power desalination system is expected to provide a cost effective solution to many parts of the U.S. for water and power availability. The system is moderate in cost and requires low energy demand for desalination and no ongoing carbon footprint. Key Words - Provide listing of key words that describe this effort.
