Research abstract

Non-mechanical beam steering technology for synthetic aperture LADAR (SAL) is proposed. To enable this low size weight and power (SWaP) subsystem, wide angle non-mechanical beam steering (NMBS) will be implemented using polarization grating technology. The technology will be evaluated by testing in a coherent LADAR system to verify compatibility as a beam control system for SAL.For Phase II Boulder Nonlinear Systems (BNS) and our teaming partners, Exciting Technology and Beyond Photonics, propose to build a beam control system prototype. The prototype will have a 15 cm aperture, switch in 1 msec and weigh less than 5 kg. The field of regard will be at least 45x15 degrees in 1 degree increments and the optical throughput will be at least 80%. The beam control subsystem will be characterized by evaluating it in a conventional coherent LADAR system. We will also investigate complimentary non-mechanical continuous fine steering approaches for future integration into the beam control subsystem.
