Research abstract

The follow up research has two primary tasks: (1) to minimize thecamera design by integrating both the sensors and the computingplatform into a portable package, which a target cost of 2000 dollars; (2) to continue simulator-friendly 3D model reconstruction using semanticAnalysis. Raw data from sensors contain too many points or trianglesfor direct use in VBS2, and the data are unstructured. Novel algorithms developed in Phase I detect important semanticfeatures to reconstruct models with semantic labels. In phase II, wewill optimize the algorithm and increase its robustness to develop acommercial quality high fidelity modeling product which meets theneeds of VBS2 orother simulation engine.Monitoring the progress of ongoing projects and product developmentaddressing indoor 3D acquisition and modeling, we will developadditional software interfaces, allowing input from other types ofsensors possibly developing porting ability of modeling modules ontocellphones. We plan to develop interface with our own low-cost rapidlydeployable immersive display. Our unique display uses built-in camerasfor automatic calibration and provides up to 360-degreefield-of-view. Our goal: a complete visual simulation/training systemwhich directly uses 3D models acquired in the operational theaters, improving training, realism and efficiency.
