Research abstract

The next generation of synchrotron light sources requires much more compact vacuum chambers, greatly increasing performance requirements which are already numerous, demanding, complex and coupled. To manage the more intense synchrotron radiation, photon absorbers in the vacuum system must be sufficiently robust to accept power densities as high as 70 W/mm2. In addition, most of the residual gas in the vacuum system will result from photon-stimulated desorption, so the location and shape of the photon absorbers can have large effects on residual gas pressures. These photon absorbers must be very close to the electron beam to intercept synchrotron radiation, resulting in strong wakefields that will perturb the beam dynamics and likely also cause significant energy deposition within the chamber. Heating of vacuum system components can cause material damage and also reduce the accuracy of beam position monitors, which in turn interferes with beam feedback systems. RadiaSoft propose to develop the software required for successful design and construction of these complex UHV chambers, giving designers the tools they need to be innovative and efficient when working to incorporate new fabrication technologies. During Phase I and II, RadiaSoft will extend the capabilities of a widely used commercial multiphysics software to include synchrotron radiation from a propagating electron bunch, photon scattering, thermal outgassing, photon- stimulated gas desorption, species and pressure-dependent pumping, wakefields and their propagation, and associated surface heating. These algorithms will be developed in Java, which is a supported extension, and the resulting Java toolbox will be released as free and open source to the accelerator community. During Phase I, RadiaSoft will add new physics extensions for synchrotron radiation and subsequent heating of the chamber wall. RadiaSoft will use the native web API to enable web invocation of the multiphysics software, with an intuitive interface for design of complex, state-of-the-art particle accelerator vacuum chambers. Also, RadiaSoft will prototype the integration of the software application into our cloud computing framework. RadiaSoft is developing integrated multiphysics software to reduce risk in the mechanical design of synchrotron light sources. The software will be cloud-based and easy to use. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits: RadiaSoft will make a widely used commercial multiphysics code available in the cloud to 3rd-party customers. RadiaSoft will provide this code to our users via a server license, which allows us to resell. RadiaSoft will extend our scientific, web-application framework to manage these concurrent users, licenses, and servers as well as to collect usage-based fees. RadiaSoft’s framework architecture – a JavaScript GUI in the browser interacting with a simulation engine and repository on a remote cluster – is compatible with selling pay-as-you-go subscriptions for 3rd party customers. This service will also be provided behind customer firewalls when desired.
