Research abstract

To address the Navys need for a new environment model replicating various radar environmental effects for multiple surface ship radar training systems, Physical Optics Corporation (POC) has developed Scalable Physics-based Adaptation of Radar Clutter (SPARC) software with realistic and consistent replication of complex environmental effects on diverse radar types in surface radar training systems. In Phase I, we have established the overall architecture based on a comprehensive survey of clutter effects models. Key elements of the Phase I prototype demonstrated to the Technical Monitor include a generic radar model, radar effect models, clutter models, and an interactive graphical user environment for accepting radar/environmental parameters, and viewing radar screens. In Phase II, SPARC will be further improved and optimized by including the capability for receiving environment and radar control changes from simulators in the high-level architecture (HLA) federation and producing radar displays updated in a timely manner for the users terminal simulators. The Phase II prototype will include a multiuser software prototype for use by the radar trainer as well as trainees. POC will leverage existing relationships with Raytheon to transition the Phase II software prototype that will be ready for transition to military and commercial applications.
