Research abstract

TUI proposes to develop an integrated Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) system for the MQ-8C Fire Scout and other rotary wing platforms. The Phase I effort developed a detailed concept design for the Micro-MAD Tow system compatible with ultra-compact, high-sensitivity, low-power, low cost magnetometer technologies. The Micro-MAD Tow system enables the Fire Scout to meet requirements for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) MAD capabilities. The Phase II effort will mature the design of the systems pod and tow cable based on the results of the anticipated Phase I Option functional testing to deliver a high performance yet SWaP minimized system design. A detailed sensor package and tow body design will be completed in collaboration with a sensor manufacturer. TUI will then build and integrate an engineering model of the complete MAD Tow system and perform preliminary flight testing. Development and system validation performed over the course of the Phase II effort will prepare TUI for flight stabilization testing using a Part-133 Class A certified helicopters in the Phase II Option and eventual qualification, production, and deployment of the system in follow on efforts.
