Research abstract

This SeaLandAire Phase II proposal for the SBIR Topic # N142-117 (Components for a Deep Drifting Sonobuoy System) is in response to the request for quote received from ONR. We updated our initial Phase II proposal based on feedback received from the ONR TPOC to focus on two key technology areas. The first is fiber optic tether technology and the second is the PolyPlus battery technology. A third area of emphasis is system engineering design for an A-size sonobuoy. Two key milestone decisions were identified for the tether and battery technologies respectively that required at-sea demonstration tests. The development of a prototype Deep Drifting Environmental Measurement Sonobuoy (DDEMS) is planned as a test and engineering measurement platform to support development and evaluation of technology components for a deep drifting sonobuoy, such as being developed by the NGAPS FNC program. To accommodate the above focus and milestones, the DDEMS development plan is being accomplished in a four increment design and test cycle. The first two increments focus on meeting the test decision milestones for the tether and battery technologies. The third and fourth increments provide additional capabilities needed for longer life and to demonstrate full performance expectations.
