Research abstract

Collision Avoidance (CA) radar systems are required for compliance with the Navys operational requirement for Sense And Avoid (SAA) for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs). The Radar Airborne Collision Avoidance System (RACAS) is designed to provide CA capabilities for both Triton and Fire Scout to significantly increase the flexibility and efficiency of using these DoN platforms to prosecute their missions. Without RACAS and in certain airspaces, these platforms may be restricted to operations either at high altitudes or where there is ground or ship based SAA. SAA radars are to operate in one of the Aeronautical Radio Navigation Service (ARNS) bands. For RACAS this frequency band extends from 5350 to 5460 MHz. UnlicensedNational Information Infrastructure (U-NII) devices are now permitted to operate on a non-interference basis in frequency bands allocated to primary Federal services. This currently does NOT include RACASs ARNS band; however, U-NII devices may eventually operate in those bands. This SBIR leans ahead to the possibilities of U-NIIs being in the RACAS SAA band to ensure that RACAS capabilities remain robust against airborne collision threats. In particular this effort quantifies the effect of U-NIIs on RACAS and tests and implements RACAS U-NII Mitigation (RUM) techniques.
