Research abstract

This Small Business Technology Transfer Phase I project aims to study and demonstrate the feasibility of Compressive Sensing Bio-inspired Visual System (COSBIS), using 0.18um CMOS technology, based on 1.2Kx1.2Kgray scale active pixel sensor array, low power programmable 8-bit hybrid Memory Digital Analog Converter (MDAC) array for compressive projection matrix, bio-inspired target features modeled from extended visual pathways on compressive sensing space and adaptation mechanism, to effectively provide warfighter needs in challenging multiple-threats and multiple-missions environments. COSBIS will enable multiple functions including person/object/vehicle (POV) tracking, wide area search, target detection/classification/recognition and homemade explosive (HME)/improvised explosive device (IED)/POV/Activity detection, to yield ultra-low size, weight, and power (SWaP) persistent/multi-functional ISR systems. The objective of this proposal is to study the architecture and develop the simulations to demonstrate the feasibility of COSBIS for hardware implementation. Anticipated technical results include demonstration of COSBIS to successfully perform significantly different tasks of full/partial, noisy and low-resolution target object for detection, recognition, identification and tracking under hardware configuration and constraints e.g., limited bit quantization of MDAC.
