Research abstract

Small to mid-size farms increasingly face the competing demands of maintaining traditional agricultural operations while feeling pressured to lease prime farmland to solar power developers as a means of financial survival. The expansion of solar energy on farms presents an existential challenge, as the land required for solar installations directly competes with acreage needed for conventional farming, forcing difficult decisions about resource allocation and land use.Beyond surface-level concerns, the impact of solar installations on soil quality is critical. The construction of ground-mounted solar arrays typically requires heavy machinery, which can cause soil compaction. Compacted soil reduces porosity, leading to decreased water infiltration, poorer aeration, and impaired root growth--factors that can significantly diminish soil health and undermine future agricultural productivity. Furthermore, modern solar arrays are often effectively "permanent," with support structures driven deep into the ground, creating lasting obstacles to returning the land to farming.Roll-A-Rack solar racking addresses these challenges. This innovative system requires only half the land of conventional racking systems. Roll-A-Rack is a ballasted design, secured by weight rather than ground penetration, so it does not puncture or attach to the soil. Its simple construction allows for easy dismantling and relocation to accommodate crop rotation, and when decommissioned, the land remains agriculturally viable.By allowing farms to remain productive while generating stable income through solar energy leases, Roll-A-Rack supports food security, soil health, and the well-being and resilience of agricultural communities.
