Research abstract

The P-8 Maritime Patrol Aircraft is a jet, unlike its predecessor, the P-3, and is less likely to fly at low altitudes. As a result, the P-8 will not be able to use its Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) to verify a contact detection. In its SBIR Phase I effort, titled "Airborne source multistatics", HLS Research has developed a concept of operations where an acoustic source, deployed on an airborne platform, potentially a P-8, can be used in conjunction with air-deployed acoustic sensors to replace the functionality of the MAD system. Variants of this conops have been modeled for both shallow water and deep water scenarios.
