Research abstract

The SafeTraces and subcontractor Gate Scientific team is forging a groundbreaking biosensor to redefine airborne pathogen detection, bolstering military health security in high-risk settings. Building on a successful Phase I prototype, this initiative delivers a compact, field-ready platform that seamlessly integrates air sampling, qPCR, and embedded analytics to pinpoint threats like influenza, RSV, and Staphylococcus aureus with exceptional accuracy. Designed for ease of use and operation, the system functions independently of external networks or labs, providing commanders with swift, actionable insights to avert outbreaks and maintain mission readiness. By project’s end, we aim to deliver two advanced prototypes, each equipped with microfluidic cartridges detecting four pathogens, revolutionizing environmental surveillance for both military and civilian biosafety. Our Phase II efforts center on ruggedizing and refining the biosensor and consumables for military-grade performance. Starting with DoD stakeholder collaboration to pinpoint critical pathogens, we will enhance the system’s durability to withstand extreme conditions, ensuring reliable operation in austere environments. The consumables will be optimized for robust air capture and streamlined qPCR processing, with a low-volume production line established by Months 15–18 to ensure scalability. Field trials at commercial biosafety labs will validate performance, incorporating veriDART technology to safely simulate aerosols, while iterative refinements will boost detection precision and user simplicity. This ruggedized platform, tailored for the Department of Defense’s needs for next generation airborne pathogen environmental detection systems , will also support civilian applications in high-traffic venues, with Phase III plans to diversify cartridges for region-specific pathogens, fortifying global health security.
