Research abstract

Leveraging the results of our Phase I work, Torch proposes developing an innovative instrumentation system integrated with automated data processing and data fusion algorithms to capture full-hemisphere, open-air, fragment mass, geometry and velocity information from arena and sled warhead characterization tests.Data from multiple visible and infrared high-speed cameras will be correlated and fused to derive fragment three-dimensional state (position, velocity, angular momentum) and mass/geometry information.Specialized camera optics will be developed to improve the debris measurement signal-to-noise ratio.A unique track correlation methodology will be implemented to handle the large number of measured objects. In addition, procedures for utilizing these data products to anchor core lethality models are illustrated. Our Phase II work plan will focus on developing the instrumentation suite and live-fire field test measurements to gather the data required to validate our concept.Approved for Public Release 14-MDA-7739 (18 March 14).
