Research abstract
Technology is transforming the transportation industry to support the needs of the Government’s supply chain stakeholders. Innovative new products are delivering asset intelligence and driving improvements in In Transit Visibility (ITV) by bringing together the Internet of Things (IoT) and data analytics in support of Joint Force deployments and contingency movements across the Joint Deployment and Distribution Enterprise. Intermodal transportation involves shipping goods such as DLA Class 4 in a container using different modes of transport like ocean vessel, rail, and trailer/road to move the secured container. This requires special emphasis on the container tamper monitoring of intra-theater movements from the port of debarkation to the tactical assembly area and ultimately to the point of need. Recent emerging products that can detect the container door tampering of a secured shipping container by providing a real time geolocated tamper alert. The objective of this project is to leverage and perform analytics from recent and ongoing DLA CLASS IV shipment container tamper signals to calculate probabilities of false detection and confidence factors for the tamper event. The confidence factors will be used to understand if the tamper event was a false tamper event, or an allowed tamper event such as a planned opening of the containers for cargo loading/unloading and customs inspections or a high priority unplanned tamper event. It is advantageous and necessary to use real world scenarios of container tamper data to ensure the analytics and algorithms developed are robust and represents the environmental conditions of real container logistics.
