Research abstract

Secure-Private Area Network (S-PAN) provides a secure, short-range wireless link between COTS end user devices (smartphones/tablets) and associated tactical radios. The tactical radios provide for communications over longer ranges to applications served to the user devices running on secured backend networks. The DoDs field integration and test activities held during NIE 12.1 and 12.2 at the Ft. Bliss, Texas and White Sands Missile Range in White Sands, New Mexico demonstrated the value (increased productivity, quick implementation, lower cost, wireless operation) in having smartphones (and Android Apps) connect to the Soldier Radio Waveform (SRW) network. Under a previous Phase II SBIR, DataSoft developed SideBridge, a wireless access point module for the Rifleman radio, to allow an Android-based smartphone to connect wirelessly to the radio. This allowed a whole host of applications to be developed on the Android end user device without the restrictive nature of cables. Under this SBIR, DataSoft will create a Radio Access Point (RAP) module for the AN/PRC-117G radio, and add NSA-approved encryption - COTS Solutions for Classified (CSfC) techniques for wireless transmission of classified information (including key handling) to the wireless link. We will also create a Device Access Point (DAP) that allows other accessories to connect securely with the AN/PRC-117G radio. Additionally, DataSoft will add a LCD screen to the SideBridge module to provide visual indicators of the operating status of the Rifleman radio. DataSoft has worked extensively with the JTRS HMS program during the design and development of the Rifleman and Manpack radios and leverages our experience with the radio hardware, software and SRW waveform to develop these new capabilities.
