Research abstract

B.E. Meyers Co., Inc. (BEM) and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) have identified an opportunity to increase the manufacturability, and likely the performance, of SNL’s Precision Optical Wind Sensor (POWS). Since producing POWS units remains a complicated and expensive engineering procedure, there exists significant opportunity to apply BEM expertise to reengineer portions of the POWS for manufacturability and apply advanced techniques to production. This will enable a significant increase in production capacity, addressing ongoing unmet demand, while maintaining or improving unit performance. The output of this Phase I effort will have a direct relationship to a Phase II effort for the Down Range Crosswind Sensing effort. All production directions will be fully designed, procured, built, and tested in Phase II. Phase I output that will be direct input for Phase II: BEM will identify what the production direction POWS design will be including the production direction POWS BOM to achieve the technical objectives. This will be a direct input to a Phase II as production direction to design, procure, build and test for the production POWS unit.
