Research abstract

Through the use of flexible electronics, layered manufacturing and customized CAD software, a new manufacturing technology has been developed. The combination of manufacturing techniques and novel use of CAD software allows for the benefits provided by micro manufacturing without the pitfalls of low bulk and small actuation gaps/forces. Most feature sizes of devices and systems produced can be in the Meso range by the use of conventional and micro machining. By developing standardized modules and interfaces the system allows engineers to design and fabricate complex mechatronic structures or devices in hours rather than weeks. To prove the technology, a group of Mesobots robots with feature sizes in the meso range are being constructed.
