Research abstract

The Department of the Air Force (DAF) faces a critical gap in communications inside RF-degraded infrastructure such as bunkers, tunnels, and hardened buildings, where traditional Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems routinely fail. In contested logistics or ACE scenarios, this results in operational delays, confusion, or mission failure. Existing solutions like Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) are prohibitively expensive and leave most facilities without coverage.Saltenna’s Plasmonix™ SignalStorm mesh node system addresses this challenge by enabling secure, high-bandwidth wireless communication through and along conductive surfaces. Instead of relying on rewiring or fixed infrastructure, Plasmonix™ uses surfaces like concrete, metal, and rebar to propagate signals in environments where RF is normally blocked. Field testing has shown 3x–10x performance improvements over traditional RF in obstructed settings. This Phase II effort, supported by AFCEC, AFRL/RI, and the C2 Modernization Team, will adapt and prototype a modular Plasmonix™ system tailored for DAF installations. Saltenna will deliver and test rugged, low-SWaP mesh nodes that extend LMR communications in RF-degraded areas without relying on DAS. The system supports JADC2 goals and ensures resilient communications for ACE, base defense, and disaster recovery operations.
