Research abstract

ObjectiveThe objective of this proposal is to develop a physically secure radio to earpiece and radio to phone file transfer system. This system will enable military personnel to securely transfer data between their devices without the need for external infrastructure or network connectivity. ProblemCurrent radio to ear piece communication methods rely on wired connections or Bluetooth, which are vulnerable to detection, interception and disruption, exposing AFSPECWAR Airmen to threats due to leaky signals.  SolutionThis proposal proposes to use Wi-R Body Area Communication to enable physically secure radio to ear piece comms and radio to phone file transfer via Wi-R. Wi-R is a novel wireless communication technology that utilizes the human body as a communication channel. This technology offers several advantages for secure communication, including:Physical Security: Wi-R signals are confined within the human body, making them virtually impossible for unauthorized parties to intercept. Low Power Consumption: Wi-R is a highly energy-efficient communication technology, making it ideal for wearable devices. High Data Rates: Wi-R can support data rates of up to 20 Mbps, which is sufficient for transferring large files. Proposed ApproachThe proposed approach involves developing a custom low-power Wi-R IC and system for radio to ear piece comms and radio to phone file transfer via Wi-R. The system will include a wearable Wi-R module for each device, as well as a software plugin for required applications. The software plugin will enable users to initiate file transfers between their devices without wires or RF connections (e.g. bluetooth).  Research and DevelopmentThe research and development activities for this project will focus on the following areas:Characterization of the Wi-R channel for data transfer via skin between three devices: This will involve measuring the channel loss and interference characteristics of the Wi-R channel under various conditions, including different device positions, different body postures, and environmental factors. Development of a wearable Wi-R module: This will involve designing and fabricating a wearable module that integrates the Wi-R IC, antennas, and power management circuitry. Development of a software plugin: This will involve developing a software plugin that enables users to initiate file transfers between their devices via Wi-R protocol. ConclusionThis proposal outlines a comprehensive plan for developing a physically secure radio to ear piece comms and radio to phone file transfer via Wi-R. The proposed approach leverages the unique capabilities of Wi-R to provide a secure, low-power, and high-data-rate communication solution for communication devices. The expected outcomes of this project will significantly enhance the situational awareness and operational effectiveness of JTACs and other AFSPECWAR personnel.
