Research abstract

To address the Army’s need for a multispectral gamma detector to support explosives detection, Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposes to develop a new Digital Explosive Ordnance Detection (DEOD) system. This system is based on a pixelated NaI(Tl) scintillator and embedded signal enhancement and pulse-shape discrimination software. The innovation in pixelated detector design for signal enhancement and noise suppression, coincidence detection approach, and signal discrimination will enable detection of explosive quantities as low as 10 kilograms using Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA). DEOD offers high-resolution (1–3%) detection of gamma lines with energies 2-11 MeV needed for PGNAA, and achieves directionality to within 10 degrees. It allows real-time (
